The movie Mystic Messenger is based on the book of the same name by Sage Smith. I hadn't read the book before, but saw the movie and I'm surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Smith obviously knew something about Native American spirituality when he wrote this screenplay, because many of the events that unfold in the film are similar to things I've heard about from Native Americans in general. Brother Midnight is sent by his people, the Indigenous American Ketchikan Indians, to deliver medicine to the white settlers at what is now called Fort Snelling. He is not allowed to pass through the Gate of the Sun because it was made by white men. He threatens to destroy the village if they do not allow him access. However, some brave warriors enter the fort and defeat him and his men. They return with the medicine, but Brother Midnight returns, and terrorizes the remaining warriors.

 

Now we are presented with another Native American story in the guise of a Hollywood movie. This one involves a young boy who belongs to a drug family. Drugs are very bad for our health, so this boy starts to sell drugs to the members of his family. Eventually, the father of one of the drug families dies, and his son takes over the family business.

How Much is Just Another Story in Mystic Messenger?

 

We learn that he is really angry at his brother's murder, so he orders his evil henchman to perform an autopsy on the dead man to find out if he was killed by an accident. One of the henchmen accidentally kills one of Brother Midnight's family members (so to cover his tracks), so he is sent to kill Brother Midnight once and for all. This movie had the best opening sequence I have ever seen in my life. The movie drags you into it's story so you don't want it to end. There is a lot of action, and the acting is superb, even if some of it could use some work.

 

However, as the story progresses the film starts to drag. The fighting becomes predictable, and sometimes it's obvious that the movie is just trying too hard to keep up with its crazy characters. It also has very poor language, and some of the dialogues are corny. The main storyline of the movie is so poor that I felt like I was skipping half of the movie! Other than that, it's a great movie...

 

Ben Kingsley is absolutely fantastic in this movie. His role is so important, because his character has such a dramatic buildup to the fight with Brother Midnight. It makes him come across as a real threat to the Ghost Rider, which is what makes him and the Ghost Rider so terrifying. Kingsley's acting is great throughout the movie, but his motorcycle scenes are a little uninteresting.

 

Overall, this movie is a decent action film, with some good one liners. It's not a great movie that will appeal to everyone, but it's a good one for those who do enjoy action movies. I would recommend watching this if you like the Ghost Rider, or any other superhero movies. It's not a top selling film, but it's still a very entertaining watch.
